Adam has Cerebral Palsy and Duchene’s Muscular Dystrophy. Born with undiagnosed brain anomaly, Kaila is deaf and muscularly compromised. Apert’s syndrome caused Allie’s bones to fuse while in her mother’s womb. Having worked with these children for 7 years, we can attest to the fact that, spiritually, they are created equal. But physically, there is no equality for these children . . . . . Yet. In recent history, human kind has been remarkably short sighted. Our stewardship of the earth has been poor. Our humanity to the other species that reside with us has been questionable. Our desire to assist other people unequally blessed, has been minimal. But in the last few years, a powerful and genuine change has begun. We have witnessed the results of our short sightedness, and we have taken some remarkable steps to reverse our negative impact. Remember Adam. He has no mobility. But does that mean that Adam cannot bike through the awe-inspiring California mountains with his family? Kaila cannot yet walk without assistance. So will Kaila never experience the exhilirating slope of a snow-covered mogul, swooping up, catching air and landing so that snowflakes swoosh onto her cheeks and nose? Allie is frequently recovering from yet another surgery. With her arm wrapped and her beautiful, little face so unusual to her peers, can she never feel like just one of the kids? As we enter the 21st century, we have the extraordinary opportunity to move our philosophy of equality out of the textbooks and into real life. We believe this can be accomplished by creating a place where there is access for everybody to every good thing. We believe this place can be a community thriving on connections which have always existed in nature – humanity to the land, the land to the animals, the animals to humanity. We believe this place can be self-sustaining. We believe this place can provide employment and residence for many disabled and non-disabled citizens. We believe this place can draw families together and leave them stronger. We believe this place can make up for some of our historical short-sightedness by using the land for a four-season harvest that is sweet, organic and pure. We believe this place can provide shelter and rehabilitation for animals injured or compromised as well as education for our children. To accomplish this end, numerous resources are necessary.

We take this moment to honor the passing away of Adam at the close of the century. "Adam, run hard, eat well and save me a place on the rollercoaster!" |
